El Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica (DIMEC) de la Universidad de La Serena, es una Unidad Académica cuyo rol es formar profesionales en el ámbito de su especialidad, competitivo y comprometido con la eficiencia energética y sustentabilidad ambiental.
La especialidad de mecánica en la Universidad de La Serena es casi centenaria, y sus comienzos se remontan en la Escuela Práctica de Minería al año 1930, al surgir como complemento a la especialidad de Minas y su avance ha estado de acuerdo a la evolución económica, tecnológica y productiva de la zona norte. Primeramente fue dictada a nivel de grado de oficios, para luego ser adscrita a la Universidad Técnica de Estado (UTE), sede La Serena. El año 1961 se inicia la dictación del Técnico Mecánico Universitario, siendo reemplazado el año 1968 por la carrera de Ingeniería de Ejecución en Mecánica. En el año 1981, al formarse la actual Universidad de La Serena, se crea la carrera de Ingeniería Civil Mecánica.
El ámbito de acción del DIMEC, se realiza en términos docente, investigación y de extensión y vinculación con el medio con una planta académica altamente calificada con postgrado y larga experiencia industrial.
